Better Business Bureau tips for local home shows
As thousands of Washingtonians embark on Spring home repairs and remodeling projects, Better Business Bureau aims to protect consumers as they shop local home expos and trade shows.
“Home shows are great opportunities for people to shop around and gather ideas,” says Tyler Andrew, CEO of BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. “But it’s important for attendees to remember that vendors are ultimately there to make sales, not friends.”
Before walking through the doors, BBB offers some simple planning advice:
- Research first. Check out show websites in advance and locate appealing vendors. Understand the layout and research companies online at bbb.org.
- Shop around. Collect information, network and ask questions. Engage with booth owners, get specifics on pricing and understand company policies.
- Stay on budget. Avoid impulse spending and stick with goals. Steer clear of high-pressure sales tactics.
- Check registration. Before hiring contractors, check to see that they are properly registered; registered contractors must have liability insurance, business licenses and bonds.
Keep in mind that purchases made at home shows—or other places that are not the sellers’ permanent place of business—are subject to the Feral Trade Commission’s Cooling-Off Rule, entitling buyers to full refunds if requested within three days.
