Tahoma High School cracked the top 1,400 in the United States in an academic ranking of high schools by Newsweek magazine.

The rankings, which also have Tahoma among the top 25 in Washington, are based on the percentage of students taking Advanced Placement (college-level) classes.

Tahoma is number 1,355 overall. Other schools in Washington in the top 1,400 nationally are located in Bellevue, Seattle, Spokane, Pierce County, Sammamish, Pasco, Blaine and Kitsap County.

To come up with the rankings, the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2007 were divided by the number of graduating seniors, according to Newsweek. All of the schools on the list are in the top 5 percent of public schools throughout the U.S. measured this way. At Tahoma, 25 percent of all graduating seniors had at least one passing grade on one AP or IB test, Newsweek reported.

Tahoma has AP courses in calculus, computer science, European history and statistics.
