Revision needed for Maple Valley park bond to pass | Letter to the Editor

The parks bond in its current form has some projects that have great appeal and some that potentially can result in the bonds failure. Thus I feel a revision is necessary to ensure passage. The bond should be itemized so the voter can choose which projects to support.

The summit complex has the best chance of passage and should have prime billing. Next in potential is Lake Wilderness Park for its upgrades to the 10 year plan. Both of these need much more information as to their content and long term financing challenges.

Legacy Site should be removed from the bond. The City Council has stated that they will appoint a task force to review the old CAC reports, updating the results to the current needs of the City plus including the financial aspects. Thus it is too premature to push for a Bond Levy when there is totally no accepted direction for use for the property.

The inclusion of the golf course probably would cause the whole bond to fail. Remodeling the clubhouse and restaurant is not cost justified. The restaurant has always had a problem being profitable while the course has a much better potential. This is another area for a council task force to examine the course and find its best use for the future prior to any funding action.

In conclusion I would propose only two items be included on the bond: Summit ball fields and Lake Wilderness Park.
