6K for clean water kicks off May 6

More than 10 countries will participate in World Vision’s Global 6K for Water.

The Maple Valley Presbyterian Church will host the 6K starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 6.

The 6K represents the average distance people walk to get water for their families in developing countries, according to a media release.

Community service program hosts town meetings

Residents in unincorporated areas of King County can meet with officials to learn more about grant opportunities available to them and their community.

The King County Community Service Area program is sponsoring the town hall open houses from now until June.

The open houses will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

Those in the greater Maple Valley and Cedar River area, an open house is scheduled for Monday, May 15. Councilman Reagan Dunn, King County Sheriff John Urquhart and Senior Deputy Executive Fred Jarrett are scheduled to be at this town hall.

The Hobart Church at 27524 SE 200th Street will host the town hall.

For those in the Renton area, Northwood Middle School in Fairwood will host one Tuesday, May 9 with Dunn, Urquhart and Budget Director Dwight Dively are scheduled to attend this one.

And Maple Hills Elementary School at 15644 204th Ave. SE in Renton will host a town hall Tuesday, May 2. Dunn, Urquhart and Executive Representative Whitney Abrams will be in attendance.

Town hall with Mark Mullet

Sen. Mark Mullet, D-Issaquah, has two town hall meetings scheduled for Saturday, April 29.

The first is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Maple Valley at the Tahoma School District Central Services building.

The second is an hour later from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Eagle Room at Issaquah Town Hall on East Sunset Way.

Mullet will provide updates on new bills from the 2017 legislative session along with information on K-12 funding and transportation improvements, a media release stated.

Benefit concert coming April 29

The Revisit the Legend of Steppenwolf Benefit Concert will help lost, abandoned and homeless animals at the Auburn Valley Humane Society.

The benefit concert is from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at Auburn Mountainview High School.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The event kicks off with a raffle, auction, CDs, T-shirts and concessions.

All ages are welcome. General admission is $25, VIP tickets are $50 and Backstage ticket passes are $100 each.

Tickets can be purchased at the Auburn Valley Humane Society or online at https://brownpapertickets.com/event/2854538. Pre-order ticket sales end at noon April 28.

Remaining tickets will be available at the box office one hour prior to showtime.

Property taxes due May 1

The first of half of 2017 property taxes are due no later than May 1. Any payments collected after that date will collect interest and penalties.

There are a number of different ways for taxpayers to pay their property taxes including:

• Online using King County’s secure online application.

• By mail if postmarked no later than May 1. Taxpayers must include their statement and write their property tax number of their check. Cash should not be sent through the mail.

• At the King County Community Service Centers – locations and operating house can be found at www.kingcounty.gov/CSC.

• Taxpayers can also pay in person at the Treasury Operations at the King County Administration Building in Seattle.

Help seniors get to appointments

The Sound Generations Volunteer Transportation received the 2017 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for their efforts in helping seniors throughout King County.

More volunteer drivers are currently needed throughout the county.

May blood drives

The Cascade Regional Blood Services has released its schedule for May blood drives in the area.

Three are scheduled throughout the area, the first being from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 4 at Kentlake High School.

The following week on May 9 Kent-Meridian High School in Kent will host one from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

And the third drive is scheduled for May 16 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Covington Safeway.

Best Start for Kids is coming to town

On Thursday, May 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Greater Maple Valley Community Center the Best Start for Kids Road Show will host an hour and a half meeting with Best Start staff members.

This meeting will focus on information surrounding Best Start for Kids with a presentation followed by various breakout sessions.

Maple Valley council, staff adopt a road

In an effort to clean up the area near Witte Road, city council members and staff walked along Witte Road from state Route 169 to Cedar Downs picking up trash and other debris.

The team will be back in a few weeks to check on the area.
