Kentwood, Kentlake and Tahoma earn nominations for 5th Avenue Theatre 2009 High School Musical Theater Awards

Earlier this week the 5th Avenue Theatre announced its nominees for the 2009 High School Musical Theater Awards and some local names made the list.

Tahoma High students Elise Myette was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Audrey in "Little Shop of Horrors."

Hannah Fiskum, Sabrina Roberts and Jenna Fernandez, a trio of Tahoma High students, got the nod in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Group category.

Ken Riggs, music instructor at Tahoma High, was nominated for best Outstanding Music Direction while Melissa Corby received an honorable mention in Outstanding Direction.

Kentwood received nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Chorus and Rebecca Lloyd for Outstanding Direction of the school's production of "Li'l Abner.

Tida Svy played Mammy Yokum in "Li'l Abner" at Kentwood and was rewarded for her work with a nomination in the Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role category.

Kentwood's Linnea Ingalls was nominated for her portrayal of Daisy Mae in "Li’l Abner" in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Jared Rein in Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance of Marrying Sam in "Li’l Abner."

Hillary Dial of Kentwood received honorable mention in the Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Carmen Burnstein in "Curtains" while Colin Ference was nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role his portrayal of Christopher Beling.

Kentlake High's production of "Annie Get Your Gun" was nominated for Outstanding Stage Crew as well as Outstanding Lobby Display while Kentlake students Gabbie Dewalt was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in the title role.

In addition Grant Hayden from Kentlake and Sam Morcom from Tahoma Junior High will receive Special Honors for Student Achievement.

According to the 5th Avenue Theatre's Web site, during the past school year, a team of theater professionals were sent out to evaluate each school's production. Nominations were made in 21 categories, from overall musical production to lobby display.

The awards will be handed out a 7 p.m. on Monday, June 8, at the 5th Avenue Theatre.
