A 14-year-old boy died as the result of an apparent drowning accident last Friday at Lake Meridian.

According to the Kent Fire Department, which was involved in efforts to save the youth, he was swimming with friends in the lake west of Covington when he began struggling and slipped beneath the surface.

Divers from fire and rescue agencies found him in about 25 feet of water in the lake’s designated area for swimming. He’d been under water for 29 minutes, authorities reported.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died Saturday. His name was being withheld.
