The Department of Ecology is proposing to remove the Four Corners Auto Wrecking parcel from the hazardous site listing according to a press release from the agency.
The property is located at 26615 Maple Valley-Black Diamond Highway S.E. and is owned by Kite Realty Group based in Indianapolis, Ind.
The site is listed buy Ecology as 10.5 acres and the realty company is proposing to develop the property for both commercial use and retail.
According to the press release, the area was used for automotive salvaging from 1970 to 2005. Kite Realty removed more than 4,000 tons of soil contaminated with lead, cadmium, polychlorinated biphenyls and oil products under "Ecology’s Voluntary Cleanup Program in 2006."
Ecology stated in the release, "Groundwater, contaminated from oil products, has since met state cleanup standards. Before taking the property off the list, Ecology invites public comment until Aug. 31."
Ecology documentation stated in "June 2006, 4,040 tons of contaminated soil were excavated and safely disposed of off-site. Confirmatory soil samples were taken to assure that the cleanup was effective and met Model Toxics Control Act regulatory requirements."
The department stated groundwater tested during "four consecutive quarters showed that oil range petroleum hydrocarbons levels were below state cleanup standards."
