The Covington City Council stayed on the steady course Tuesday by re-electing Mayor Margaret Harto and Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Wagner.

Harto was nominated by Wagner and unanimously elected by the members.

Covington’s form of government is council-manger with the mayor and mayor pro tem elected every two years following the November general election. The mayor and mayor pro tem are selected from within the ranks of the council and elected by the members.

After nominating Harto, Wagner said, “You have done an outstanding job and I would like to see you continue.”

Following her election, Wagner noted it was Harto’s birthday and the members and audience sang happy birthday to her.

Harto thanked the members for her re-election and said, “I do enjoy the job as mayor. I have been a resident for 40 years and it is a privilege and honor to serve the citizens and (serve) with the six other council members.”

Councilman Mark Lanza nominated Wagner for another term as mayor pro tem.

Lanza said Wagner has “represented the city well and more importantly, he has represented this city well over the last 20 years as a citizen and business owner.”

Harto will be serving her third term as mayor. She was appointed to the council in February 2002.

Wagner will serving his second term as mayor pro tem. He was appointed to the council in January 2004.
