Volunteer and Commissioner of the Year

Two Covington residents were voted as volunteer and commissioner of the year. Laura Morrissey was voted as the commissioner of the year and George Pearson is the volunteer of the year.

Morriseey joined the Parks and Recreation Commission in 2013 and has served as the vice-chair. For the last two years, she has served as the chair, leading the commission through a number of achievements. She and her family are avid users of the city’s parks and programs.

Pearson’s level of dedication to his community led him to the honor of volunteer of the year. He volunteers with the police department and spends countless hours at Jenkins Creek park. He spends countless hours doing labor intensive work at Jenkins Creek Park. He is the first person to receive this award two years in a row.

Call for artists

The Covington Arts Commission is looking for artists of all mediums. These mediums include painting, drawing, photography and mixed media to exhibit their work at the Covington City Hall Art Gallery during the 2017 season. The season starts in April and runs through December. The selected artists will display for one month during the season and they will be selected by the Covington Arts Commission.

Since opening the art gallery in 2004, more than 100 local artists and groups have displayed their work in the gallery. The Covington Parks and Recreation Department, with the Covington Arts Commission is currently accepting submissions from local and regional artists to exhibit their original artwork.

Another thing artists can look forward to if they are picked to have their artwork in the art gallery is that the city’s annual art purchase will be made from one of the artists selected to display during the 2017 season.

The application deadline is Feb. 21.
