January meeting announcement

The Greater Maple Valley Unincorporated Area Council will hold its monthly meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 8.

The meeting is a week later than usual due to New Year’s Day on Jan. 1.

The meeting will be held at the Maple Valley Fire Station at the corner of Southeast 231st Street and state Route 169.

There will be two guest speakers at the Monday meeting — new police precinct commander Major Daniel Pingrey and Tahoma School District Superintendent Rob Morrow.

Candidates for membership for the council will be interviewed, elected and sworn in.

Local airman graduates from basic training

U.S. Air Force Airman Marcus A. Ochoa, a 2017 Tahoma High School graduate, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

He completed an eight-week program that included military discipline, physical fitness and other skills.

Free tax workshop Jan. 9

The Washington State Department of Revenue is hosting a free workshop for new and small business owners from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 in Seattle, 2101 Fourth Avenue Suite 1400.

Attendees will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales tax collection and record-keeping requirements, a release stated.

Those in attendance will also receive a workbook and reference guide.
