Tahoma cross country dominates at sub-district meet
Tahoma dominated the cross country sub-district meet Oct. 26 as both the boys and girls teams ran away with the titles while Riley Campbell finished first in the boys race and Delaney Tiernan won the girls race at Fort Steilacoom State Park in Lakewood.
In the boys varsity race, five Bears runners finished in the top seven. Campbell crossed the finish line in 15 minutes, 43.38 seconds, about 11 seconds ahead of Robin Cheema of Kentwood, who finished second. Tahoma sophomore Graeme Schroeder finished third in 16:03.32 followed by Tristan Houser in fifth, Nick Pennington in sixth and Keegan Fitzpatrick in seventh.
Campbell's time was a personal best on a 5 kilometer course.
Kentwood junior Jared McMeen finished ninth while Kentlake's Ryan Pitchford came in 14th.Meanwhile, Tiernan won the girls race in 18:24.85, with three other Tahoma runners placing in the top 10. Tiernan, who is a junior, also recorded a personal record at the sub-district meet.
Tiernan beat out Jordan McPhee of Mount Rainier. A year ago McPhee won the sub-district meet, crossing the finish line 35 seconds ahead of Tiernan.
Tahoma freshman Kayla Contreras finished fourth while Cheyenne Greenside, Abigail Atchison and Peyton Shinnick finished eighth, ninth and 12th respectively for the Bears.
Kent-Meridian freshman Olivia Baerny finished third while Kentridge junior Kyra Kaiser came in 10th, Kentlake's Melissa Carter was 45th and Kentwood's Maggie Altobelli finished 47th.
Runners will compete in the Westside Classic district meet this weekend at American Lake Golf Course. The boys 4A varsity race will be at 1:40 p.m. while the girls 4A race starts at 2:40 p.m.
