Stephanie Shumaker, a defensive specialist and setter for Kentwood High School, has signed a letter-of-intent to play volleyball next fall at Lewis-Clark State College.

Her signing by the college in Lewiston, Idaho, was announced today.

Shumaker helped Kentwood finish third in Washington's 4A state high school volleyball tournament last year. This season, the team is undefeated.

At Lewis-Clark, Shumaker will join a team that this year is 23-1 and ranked tenth nationally in the NAIA.

The Warriors recruited the 5-foot-2 Shumaker partly because of her abilities as a defender and her on-court enthusiasm.

Assistant coach Burdette Greeny said "we're looking at her as a defensive specialist for us. It always helps to have someone with good hands playing in the back row, and good setters have those hands."

Greeny also noted Shumaker "is very energetic and her enthusiasm is contagious. That is an integral characteristic for us.”

Shumaker, a fourth-year varsity performer for Kentwood, has won all-league honors in two of those seasons. She also was a member of the Kent Juniors Volleyball Club team that placed fifth at the Junior Olympics tournament.
