Tahoma races to the top taking subdistrict cross country championship

Next stop is the Westside Classic Saturday at American Lake Veterans Golf Course

The cross country boys and girls subdistrict championship meet was Saturday at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood. The 16 high schools for the boys and girls earned team scores in the 5,000 meters race.

The next test is the Westside Classic district meet Saturday at American Lake Veterans Golf Course, 9600 Veterans Dr SW, Tacoma.

The girls race is scheduled to begin at 11:05 a.m. and the boys at 12:10 p.m.

Tahoma

The Tahoma Bears cross country boys and girls teams are showing the right stuff once again.

The teams swept the subdistrict meets the boys winning with a score of 23 and the girls 38. The two teams were so far out in front that for the boys, the second place team was Auburn Riverside with a score of 102 and for the girls the second place team was Hazen with 83.

“Tahoma has been running strong all season,” coach Jeff Brady said. “Going into districts, it is great to see them all responding well to the hard work that they have been putting in. We want to be a strong representative of our new North Puget Sound League.”

On the boys team took the top three spots with junior Dawson Besst taking the top step with a time of 15 minutes, 52.40 seconds. Coming in second was senior Colton Egberg in 16:14.40 and third was freshman Brian Martinez 16:21.00.

For the girls junior Breanna Glover in 18:53.20.

“It was great to see both Tahoma athletes win the meet,” Brady said. “Dawson Besst for the boys and Bre Glover for the girls. Both should be strong competitors next week.”

Tahoma’s cross country teams have been running at the top for years. Brady has consistently fielded top competitors each season.

“Tahoma has built a tradition over the years of winning,” Brady said. “We have had some great kids come through this program that have lifted us to new levels each year. Young athletes come into the program expecting to be one of the best teams in the state and work hard to meet those expectations. Returners have learned from the older kids what leadership looks like and step right in when it is their turn.”

Kentwood

The Conks boys team took fourth with a score of 132. The girls side 12th a score of 287.

The top runner for the girls team was senior Nicole Soleim finishing in 19:33.80.

For the boys the senior Harsimran Singh ran 14th in 16:43.70.

Kentlake

The Kentlake boys team ran eighth with a score of 217 and the Falcon girls ran 15th with 416.

The top runner for the boys team was senior Hezekiah Goodwin running 15th in 16:44.50.

For the girls freshman Krista Matuska took 70th in 22:54.40.
