A fashion fire leads to evacuation

Firefighters investigating department store blaze

Fire investigators are trying to figure out how a small fire started inside the local Fred Meyer store.

A small fire in the clothing department forced the Fred Meyer store, located at the 16700 block of Southeast 272nd Stree,t to be evacuated Saturday afternoon, June 8.

Firefighters were dispatched at 6 p.m. and found a small pile of clothing smoldering on the floor of the men’s department, according to a Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority press release. The fire had been extinguished by store employees. Although the fire did not spread far, smoke filled much of the store, forcing employees and customers to remain outside.

One person was treated for minor smoke inhalation but did not require hospitalization. The fire is considered suspicious, the press release stated. The Puget Sound fire investigator is working with store managers to review surveillance video and conduct interviews.

It is unknown when the store will reopen.
