County announces grants for unincorporated projects
On Aug. 29 it was announced that $90,000 is available in Community Service Area Program grant funding for a number of different projects in unincorporated King County.
Funding is available for projects that cost less than $5,000.

Rainier Youth Choir auditions
Now until the beginning of the season Sept. 10, auditions can be scheduled for the Rainier Youth Choir.

Once you have signed up, the choir will contact you to set up an audition time.
The youth choir is for those in second grade and older.
The season will run through June 2019.
Council celebrates lifeguards
The city of Maple Valley council celebrated the Lake Wilderness Swim Beach lifeguards during the city’s Town Hall meeting Aug. 27.
Council recognized the overall contributions of the lifeguard program, a release stated. Specific acknowledgments went to Sierra Clemens, Devin Deyerin, Aaron “Gabe” Merienau and Lucas Adams for their commitment, quick thinking and bravery. Their lifesaving efforts prevented swimmers from drowning on four separate occasions.
Also thanked by the city were HO Sports and Chris Terril for donating more than 150 life jackets over the past few years.
Lifeguards are now off duty. Recruitment for summer 2019 will begin in the spring.

Wastemobile collection coming to Kent
The Wastemobile is coming to Kent Sept. 7 to 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
It will be parked at Kent Fire Station No. 75, 15635 Southeast 272nd Street.
Residents are welcome to drop off household hazardous items including pesticides, oil based paints, automotive products, fluorescent bulbs and other items without charge.
Council meeting next week
The Greater Maple Valley Unincorporated Area Council will hold its monthly meeting from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10 at Maple Valley Fire Station No. 81, 22225 Southeast 231st Street.
The meeting will discuss the state and county’s response to State Supreme Court’s Hirst decision along with action plans.

Fall plant sale
The Soos Creek Botanical Garden & Heritage Center is hosting a fall plant sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8.

Fundraiser scheduled for Oct. 6
The Serenity Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation is hosting a fundraiser Oct. 6 in Maple Valley.
An auction, country dancing and wine tasting will be available to attendees.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and food and beverages run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. while dancing and the auction run until 10 p.m.
Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased online at brownpapertickets.com.
