The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council is working on a new project, a play titled “Woodstock Chrysalis.”
There is an open call to audition for different roles for this play. The project begins Aug. 12 and ends Sept. 22.
Woodstock Chrysalis is a new play by Ed Corrigan, a Seattle area playwright. This original work was developed at Salvo Studio Seattle.
In the play, the time is 1969. The place is the iconic Woodstock Music and Art Fair, where 400,000 “hippies and freaks” show up for three days of “peace and music, and Lord knows what else,” an Art Council press release states. What could possibly go wrong?
The young hero, Maxine, is trying her best to navigate the turbulent waters of the late 1960s. It is an era of war, the draft, sexual revolution, assassinations, counter-culture and protest. At 19 years old, Maxine feels her life is upside down compared to little more than a year ago in High School. What was right in 1967 is wrong in 1969. What is right in 1969 was wrong in 1967.
Maxine’s three-day journey at the festival is a personal odyssey of conflict, self-discovery, moral crisis and music.
Character Breakdown:
Maxine: A female high school graduate (late teens/early 20s), she is an aspiring actor/waitress living with her parents in New York City. She is serious about an acting career and works hard at it. She has intellectual curiosity. They are reconnecting at the summer’s end. She is grappling with moral dilemma created by the tumultuous times of the 1960s.
Samantha (Sam): A female college student (late teens/early 20s). Maxine’s best friend. She is adventurous and has embraced the hippie counter-culture of peace and free love. She grew up in New York City attending private schools. Her parents are professionals with very busy work lives. She was often on her own as a teenager.
Pete: A male college student (late teens/early 20s). He is bright and curious. He has lived a sheltered, traditional American small-town life, attending Catholic school through 12th grade. He has little dating experience and has never been in love.
James: A male college student (late teens/early 20s), Pete’s friend – they grew up in the same neighborhood but then were separated by attending different schools. He has lots of experience dating and has been “in love” many times.
P C: A man in his 30s – 40s, who’s a totally free spirit and self-appointed tour guide/raconteur of Woodstock Music Festival. He is a member of the Hog Farm collective, who were hired to provide security and food at Woodstock. He is committed to love and peace for all.
