New schools set to open in September

It’s the summer of updates and renovation for Tahoma School District.

Tahoma High School is completed and ready for the school year to start this fall, according to district Director of Communication, Kevin Patterson.

Construction on the school started in 2015 and is coming to a close this summer.

As for Lake Wilderness Elementary School, Patterson said the school will be ready to open on Sept. 6.

The old school is currently being demolished. Once it is cleaned out, Patterson said grass will be seeded where the school once stood.

As a whole, Patterson said the Tahoma School District is in the middle of moving furniture and books, filling the cabinets, and other school related materials among the different schools as they work toward grade realignment and changes.

“Our new middle schools are being established in the old high school and junior high buildings,” he said.

Maple View Middle School and Summit Trail Middle School will be ready for the students to move into when school starts.

The old elementary schools in the area are also being prepared and are in transition from their former use as middle schools.

Cedar River Elementary School — which was formerly Cedar River Middle School — and Tahoma Elementary School — the old Tahoma Middle School — are currently being renovated to accommodate the different grade levels.

According to Patterson, all of the old portables at the Cedar River location have been removed and the area will be transformed into parking lot.

There is a public dedication ceremony for the new Tahoma High School from 7 to 9 p.m., Aug. 8 in the gym. Another open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 12.

“We hope people can visit on one of those dates to see for themselves what a great facility it is,” Patterson said.
