Fall recycling event

The 2017 fall recycling collection event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at Rock Creek Elementary School in Maple Valley.

A number of items will be accepted during the day event including tires, motor oil and filters, batteries, cardboard, toilets and sinks, propane tanks, scrap metal, refrigerators and mattresses. Confidential paper shredding will also be available.

Items not accepted include furniture and household goods, construction debris, garbage, plastic toys, window glass, oil based paint, pesticides, household chemicals and cleaning products and fluorescent lights.

Local novelist wins award

Rick Rosenkranz, Covington resident, finished first in an international contest for Christian fiction at a gala in Texas on Sept. 23.

The event was sponsored by the American Christian Fiction Writers.

His unpublished novel, Luminarium, won the Genesis Award.

Elk Run Farm seeks volunteers

The Elk Run Farm in Maple Valley is currently looking for fall gardening assistance.

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday throughout October.

There will be two staff members on site to direct volunteers.

Public meeting on Oct. 9

The city of Maple Valley announced a public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 during the City Council meeting held at the Lake Wilderness Lodge, 22500 SE 248th Street in Maple Valley.

The hearing is regarding a potential resolution of declaration of support for Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety Proposition 1,restoring the property tax levy rate on the Nov. 7 ballot.

Computer help offered at community center

The Greater Maple Valley Community Center’s 50 and older program is offering a computer assistance and education course.

Volunteers will be on hand to assist in computer repairs, personal tutoring, upgrade installs and more.

Kentwood graduate completes boot camp

Kristian Ramos, 2017 Kentwood graduate, graduated from Marine Corps boot camp in San Diego on Sept. 22.
