May Madness begins today for Tahoma, Kentwood

The top seven 4A softball teams from the West Central District/Southwest District competing for the title of best in state have been decided.

Two of those teams vying for No. 1 are the Tahoma Bears and Kentwood Conquerors.

Following the tournament at Kent Service Club Ballfields, the Bears finished in the No. 3 spot and Kentwood in the No. 5.

The state tournament will be held at the Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane.

The Conks begin tournament play 10 a.m. today, Friday, May 25 against Jackson (13-1 in Wesco 4A play, 21-1 overall).

Tahoma will begin at noon May 25 against Monroe (9-5, 18-6).

If Kentwood and Tahoma win, the girls will move on to the second round Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26.

Tahoma

The Bears went 3-1 during the district tournament.

The girls won the first two rounds May 18 beating Todd Beamer 11-1 and Enumclaw 7-1.

Tahoma’s lost came to Rogers 7-6. Rogers went on to lose 13-6 to Puyallup in the title game.

Tahoma beat Auburn Mountainview 11-1 May 19 in a third/fourth place seeding game.

Kentwood

The Conks opened district play May 18 with a 10-5 win over Skyview.

The girls fell 17-1 to Puyallup in the second round Friday.

Kentwood won its next three games securing its spot in state as the No. 5 team.

The girls beat Federal Way 6-1 Saturday in a loser-out game. The Conks moved on to beat Auburn Riverside 11-1 May 19 and finally rounded out the district tourney with a 5-2 win over Camas.

Around town

The Kentlake Falcons played a play-in game May 15 prior to the state of the district tournament.

The girls lost the loser-out game 11-1 to Battle Ground, ending the Falcons season.
